Cutting the cord – one year later

So just a little over a year ago my family moved into our new home and made the decision that we wouldn’t be shelling out the cash for a cable subscription anymore. I gave a brief rundown of my intentions on this blog at the time and I’ll confess right off the bat that almost none of that happened. I am however still without cable and have rarely missed it so I guess that’s a modicum of success. I’m going to do an update on what I’ve been doing and where I hope to go with it in 2012. Cutting cable and joining the over the air and over the top revolution

I’m preparing to move into a new house in exactly one week and I’ve made the decision to try to drop the cable habit in the process. I still have to deal with the cable company for my internet needs, Charter Communications in my neck of the woods, but I’ll cut about 2/3 of my bill by forgoing a cable package.

In small part this is a monthly cost saving venture, but in reality it will take at least a year for me to see the net gain from this venture as I am going to have to make quite a few purchases to make it happen. I’m not honestly convinced that it is time for most people to be trying this yet, but as I have a wife, a two-year-old, a couple jobs, and now hopefully this blog again I don’t really have that much time to watch TV anyway.

I’m still in the planning phases of this project, but I thought I’d kick it off with a general outline of what I’m thinking of including and see if I got any feedback before commencing with my scheme. Read More…

Android Preparing to Suit Up?

Image of businessman with Android logo for a headThe New York Times reported yesterday that Google is getting closer to the release of an online store targeted at the business market. The store will offer software from Google’s partners with an eye to increasing the sales of Google Apps.

I might be reading too much into this, but I can’t help but think this is a harbinger of the more business minded Android device that Andy Rubin indicated would be coming soon. Read More…
